Nick Kyrgios has revealed he was kept up until the early hours by drug testers prior to his fiery 7-5 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 quarter-final victory over Stan Wawrinka at the Mexico Open.
It has been a wild week in Acapulco for the polarising Australian.
He endured a bout of food poisoning before coming from behind to upstage Rafael Nadal in three sets on Thursday (AEDT).
Nadal then slammed the 23-year-old, declaring Kyrgios ‘lacked respect’ after trading barbs with the crowd and attempting an underarm serve, which Roger Federer later defended on Kyrgios' behalf, during the epic contest.
Kyrgios scraped his knuckles in the opening game against Wawrinka, exchanged more insults with the crowd, clashed with the umpire and questioned his Swiss rival’s tactics in another roller-coaster ride on Friday.
“(It was) extremely tight, I didn’t pull up that great obviously after that Rafa (Nadal) match and I was getting drug tested until 3am last night,” Kyrgios revealed in his courtside interview after defeating Wawrinka.
“I obviously wasn’t feeling so great yesterday so against (I) showed great resilience to come out here and beat a player like Stan under some tough conditions.
“Obviously the crowd (was) going for (Wawrinka) … I knew I was going to be the underdog again but I served great.
“Even when I was cramping a little bit I still managed to serve a high first-serve percentage and in good spots.”
Kyrgios was overheard saying, ‘What is wrong with these f***ing people’ as the rowdy Acapulco crowd booed him as he received medical treatment on his hands.
The combative Canberran had another blunt message for the crowd after seeing off Wawrinka.
“They’re Rafa fans, they’re Stan fans and they can probably go fly to Indian Wells if they want to go catch them play,” Kyrgios quipped.
“But they’re still probably going to watch me tomorrow so I’m not too concerned at all.”
Despite all of the craziness, the world No.72 has been close to his best this week and will meet American John Isner in a semi-final on Saturday (AEDT).
