Never shy from voicing an unpopular opinion, former world no.1 John McEnroe believes Roger Federer's incredible run at grand slams this year is unlikely to continue at the US Open.

With the Australian Open and Wimbledon already to his name this year, Federer has defied the odds in 2017 to storm back up the tennis rankings and along with Rafael Nadal, is a strong favourite at Flushing Meadows.

But despite his remarkable year, American McEnroe struggles to see the 36-year-old adding a third grand slam to his record collection this year.

"At the moment we're just assuming that Roger is going to pull the rabbit out of the hat again," McEnroe said via ESPN.

"If Roger wins this, it will be one of the great stories in that last 50 years or ever.

"It wouldn't be shocking considering that Roger is 36 and he's had two majors already so perhaps things don't go as smoothly as they did the other times."

Though somewhat critical of Federer's chances at the US Open, an event McEnroe himself won four times, the fiery character was still full of praise for the Swiss star.

"I saw him today and I said, 'I've got to tell you, hats off. I've watched tennis for 40 or 50 years and I've never seen anything like this'."

Federer's momentum for the US Open hit somewhat of a stumbling block at the Canadian Open recently where he was beaten convincingly in the final by Alexander Zverev.
