Matt Ebden and Max Purcell have become the first all-Australian duo since 2000 to claim Wimbledon glory, coming back against reigning champions in the men's doubles final.

The pair took the first set against Croatia's Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, before losing the next two on centre court.

But in a wild turn of events, Ebden and Purcell were able to swing the momentum back in their favour, scoring a thrilling 7-6 6-7 4-6 6-4 7-6 win.

Pavic played the entire match with a broken wrist, after suffering an injury in the semi-finals and strapping it up to play the final.

Ebden and Purcell weren't exactly dominant throughout the tournament, having to save multiple match points in both their first-round and semi-finals clashes, but decided to enjoy themselves and embrace the privilege of playing on centre court.

“I thought we were out of here first round,” Purcell said after the match.

“0-40 down in the fifth, three match points, and we just won Wimbledon. How good’s that?

“Matt and I just combine so well, we’re picking each other up out there.

“Something kind of changed towards the end of the third set...we just thought, ‘let’s play on Centre Court and enjoy ourselves.’

“We did that and now we got the trophy.”

The last all-Aussie duo to claim Wimbledon glory were The Woodies - Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde - 22 years ago.

Ebden and Purcell also became the second all-Aussie duo to win a grand slam title this year, with Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis taking out the Australian Open
