The traditional Australian Open warm up event, Kooyong Classic, has been cancelled for 2022.

Coming amid significant uncertainty around the biosecurity protocols for players ahead of the Australian Open, organisers made the decision to cancel the exhibition event.

A statement from Kooyong president Adam Cossar confirmed the news on Tuesday.

"We are disappointed having to make this decision but with the great deal of uncertainty over recent months about the arrangements that would be in place in January, it has not been possible to make the necessary plans to deliver the best and safest sporting and hospitality experience for our players, spectators. sponsors, broadcasters, members and event staff," Cossar said.

Running since 1988, the three-day event in Melbourne has provided many players the perfect lead up to a successful run at the year's first Grand Slam.

Past winners include Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Ash Barty, among many more of the game's biggest names.

Players wishing to get some time on court in Australia before the Open should still have several options in 2022 as the summer's tennis schedule begins to take shape.

While Queensland's quarantine protocols place the Brisbane International in doubt, the Adelaide International is set to return next year, as is the ATP Cup, though decisions on locations are still being worked through.

After taking place in Doha and Dubai last year, Australian Open qualifying is set to return to Melbourne for the 2022 edition.

Questions remain around exactly what the protocols will be regarding vaccination and quarantine after a leaked email surfaced on Monday.

The email to WTA players suggested unvaccinated players would be permitted to come to Australia for the Open but would need to quarantine for two weeks, while jabbed players would have no restrictions on their movement.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has previously suggested unvaccinated players would struggle to be granted visas to enter the country.
