US Open 2018: John Millman 'finally getting the attention he deserves' after Roger Federer upset image

John Millman had waited a long time for his moment to arrive. Just ask father Ron and mother Shona.

Millman's extraordinary upset of Roger Federer in their fourth round US Open clash brought the tennis world to a standstill.

The 29-year-old Aussie took down the 20-time Grand Slam champion in four sets as Federer struggled to keep pace, making net approach after net approach as Millman remained content to tough it out in the oppressive New York heat.

As Australia basks in the afterglow of a reborn sporting hero, Millman senior said he was happy his son is "finally getting the attention he deserves".

However, Ron was overwhelmed by the media attention on him and his family.

"It's been unbelievable, really. Yeah, okay, it was a tennis (match), he beat Roger, so we move onto the next one, but the (media) interest... it's like a tsunami happened," Ron told Macquarie Sports Radio on Wednesday morning.

"It's overwhelming and unbelievable, but I love that my son is getting some attention.

"He's always the last one, it seems, that (Australians) think of when we think of Australian players.

"We obviously know he's pretty good. It's lovely people get to see the person he is."

You'd think Ron would have been all over his son's match, and would have been glued to every screen possible.

Not quite.

"I never saw any of it because I was teaching... the administration didn’t really seem to be doing much work," Ron said.

"The deputy head mistress was doing lots of little sprints down the stairs, and when I saw her running - and I've never seen her run - I knew it must be good news."

Millman's road to the US Open quarters has been as tough as it gets, with shoulder and groin surgeries threatening to bring his career to a premature end.

The Brisbane-born battler will again go into the last-eight clash against Novak Djokovic as a big underdog, and with the weight of expectation at his feet, it'll be even tougher.

No one knows his struggles better than his father, who revealed just how hard Millman had to work to get his tennis to a career-high level in 2018.

"He never got wildcards. He always had to play these different tournaments in all corners of the world," Ron said.

"Success is just so sweet for John at the moment... you've got to appreciate it, because he's had nothing."
