Alex de Minaur progresses to ATP final in Canada with dominant win

It was a far more straightforward affair for de Minaur following his come-from-behind victory over Medvedev, efficiently defeating Davidovich Fokina in straight sets.

His Spanish opponent struggled to find any rhythm in their semifinal, with the Australian taking the win in just 78 minutes.

De Minaur will now rise to at least 14th in the ATP rankings regardless of how the final pans out.

If he takes out the title, he could make the top 10 for the first time in his career.

"I just told myself that no matter what, I was going to compete every point," de Minaur said post-match.

"Stay positive and not get frustrated by how the match may go, and I'm just going to give myself the best chance of staying tough mentally.

"And I think that's probably what got me the win today."

De Minaur will now play in the first Masters 1000 final of his career.

His opponent is world No. 8 Sinner, who has enjoyed a strong 2023.

The Italian comes into the match after calmly dispatching of Tommy Paul in their semifinal 6-4 6-4.

De Minaur will need to overcome the odds to claim the Canadian Open title, holding an 0-4 head-to-head record against Sinner.

The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 am AEST on Monday, August 14.
