Bernard Tomic's comeback is going from strength to strength with the Aussie reaching his first ATP final since 2016.

Defeating Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-4 6-4, Tomic will meet top seeded Italian Fabio Fognini in the Chengdu Open final.

The victory sees Tomic returning to the world's top 100 with him advancing from No.123 to No.92, meaning that he could potentially directly qualify for the Australian Open.

Tomic was dominant on serve, winning 82 per cent of points when his first delivery landed and hitting 12 aces.

The Australian served for the match 5-4 in the second set, with Sousa gaining a 0-40 lead.

But Bernie broke back and won five consecutive points to secure the result.

Winning in Chengdu would be the Queenslander's fourth career title and would project him into the world's top 80.

It will be the his first finals appearence since the Aussie lost to Austria's Dominic Thiem at Acapulco in February 2016.

However, Fognini is a hot-favourite to take out the Chengdu final given his ranking of 13th in the world and 2-1 career record over the Australian.

The Italian defeated America's Taylor Fritz 6-7(5) 6-0 6-3 to reach the deciding match.

Tomic just missed out on being joined by fellow Australian Alex de Minaur in another Chinese decider, who lost his Shenzen semi-final against Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-5 2-6 7-6 10-8.
