Two-time Wimbledon doubles winner Peter McNamara has died following a long battle with prostate cancer

He was 64.

McNamara teamed with good friend Peter McNamee to win Wimbledon doubles titles in 1980 and ’82.

The Super Macs, as they were known, also won the Australian Open doubles title in 1979.

They were a constant presence in Australian Davis Cup teams for years.

Melbourne-born McNamara was also an accomplished singles player, reaching No.7 in the world in 1983.

He beat tennis greats Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors en route to two of his five singles crowns.

After retiring in 1987, McNamara turned to coaching and guided the likes of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, Australian duo Mark Philippoussis and Mark Ebden and Chinese women’s player Wang Qiang.

McNamara kept his illness quiet before dying peacefully at home with family in Germany.

His death shocked the Australian tennis community, with McNamee leading the tributes.
