Novak Djokovic and Sofia Kenin are the 2020 Australian Open champions after an epic weekend of finals action at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. 

Kenin claimed her debut Grand Slam title with a win over Garbine Muguruza on Saturday night. 

Just 24-hours later, Djokovic performed one of his greatest comebacks in beating Dominic Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINAL 2020: NOVAK DJOKOVIC VS DOMINIC THIEM

It was a classic. 

Djokovic started well, then went off the rails, allowing Thiem to take a two sets to one lead. 

Seeming down and out, Djokovic staged an all-time comeback for the five set win in a match lasting almost four hours.

HOW TO WATCH THE 2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN - TV CHANNEL, STREAM, RADIO

In Australia, the 2020 Australian Open was shown on Channel 9. This is the second year the broadcaster has hosted the first Grand Slam of the year, after taking over from long-time host Channel Seven. 

Channel 9 showed most of the action on their main channel and on 9Gem.

You could also stream every Australian Open match live on 9now, with cameras covering every court. 

You could also listen to radio commentary of the 2020 Australian Open, either at the Aus Open website , or via ABC Grandstand.

2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN PRIZE MONEY 

The total prize pool for the Australian Open is (AU) $62.5 million. That's an increase of 14% between 2019 and the year before. 

The Australian Open also awards equal prize money for men and women.

TENNIS STARS RAISE MONEY FOR AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE RELIEF

Tennis Australia's initiative comes after Nick Kyrgios, John Millman, Alex de Minaur, Ash Barty and a host of international stars have pledged to donate money to the bushfire cause. 

Kyrgios kick-started the movement, promising to donate $200 for every ace  he served over the summer of tennis. 

Millman and De Minaur quickly followed suit with similar pledges, while Barty said she will donate her entire prize-money check at the Brisbane International. 

During the Australian Open, commentator and tennis legend John McEnroe said he would donate $1,000 for every set that Nick Kyrgios wins during the tournament. 

While up and coming star Alex Zverev said he would donate his entire prizemoney from the tournament to the bushfire relief .

Other stars from around the world joined in, with Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova jumping on board with creative ideas of their own. 




WHERE IS THE 2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS? 

As always, the Australian Open is being held at Melbourne Park.

Walking distance from the CBD, the venue has held the tournament since 1988. There are three main stadiums - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Arena and Margaret Court Arena - which all have retractable roofs. 

Rod Laver Arena has a capacity of 14,820, Melbourne Arena can seat 10,500 people and Margaret Court Arena fits 7,500 fans.   

WHAT SURFACE IS THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN PLAYED ON? 

Since 2008, the Australian Open has been held on blue plexicushion.

Until 1988, it was played on grass, before switching to green rebound ace between 1989 and 2007.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams are the only two tennis players to win the Australian major on both Rebound Ace and the Plexicushion surface.

WHO WON THE 2019 AUSTRALIAN OPEN? 

Novak Djokovic was the 2019 men's Australian Open winner , claiming his seventh win in Melbourne with a 6-3 6-2 6-3 victory over Rafael Nadal. 

In the women's draw Naomi Osaka won her second major in succession with a nail-biting 7-6(2) 5-7 6-4 win over Petra Kvitova

French pairing Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut won the men's doubles in a straight sets win over Henri Kontinen and John Peers. Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai took out the women's doubles, beating Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-4.

Barbora Krejcikova and Rajeev Ram won the mixed doubles over Astra Sharma and John-Patrick Smith. 

ASH BARTY AT THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN 

Ash Barty headed into the 2020 Australian Open as the number one player in the world and was looking to win her second ever Grand Slam tournament. 

The home town favourite made it to the semi-finals, but was beaten by eventual winner Sofia Kenin in two sets. 

Until this year, Barty's best performance at her home slam came in 2019 when she advanced to the quarter-finals, losing to eventual finalist Petra Kvitova. 

Prior to that, Barty reached the third round in 2018 and 2017, and was knocked out in the first round in 2014, 2013 and 2012.

MARGARET COURT WON'T TAKE PART IN AUSTRALIAN OPEN TROPHY CEREMONY

Controversial tennis legend Margaret Court will be in Melbourne as Tennis Australia commemorates the 50th anniversary of her calendar Grand Slam, but she won't take part in any official trophy presentations. 

TA boss Craig Tiley confirmed the news on Wednesday, saying Court will remain in the stands as the winner of the Australian Open is presented.

THE LAST TIME AN AUSTRALIAN MADE IT THROUGH TO THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN MEN'S FINAL

The last time an Australian made it to the men’s final at the Australian Open was Lleyton Hewitt in 2005, though the last Australian to win the title was Mark Edmondson in 1976 (against fellow Australian John Newcombe).

20 different players have won the men’s singles title at the Australian Open since it was last won by an Australian player (Mark Edmondson in 1976).

AUSTRALIAN OPEN RALLY FOR RELIEF RAISES HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR BUSHFIRE RELIEF

Some of the biggest stars in tennis came together to raise money for the Australian bushfire relief effort. 

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, Serena Williams and many others took the court at Rod Laver Arena and raise over $4 million.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2020 MUSIC FOR RELIEF 

In addition to the Rally for Relief exhibition match , there will be a fundraising concert held on Sunday, January 19 - one day before the tournament starts. 

Jessica Mauboy, Montaigne and Lily Papas are all performing at the AO Live Stage Birrarung Marr from 3pm until 9pm. 

Tickets are available from Ticketmaster here, with kids getting in for $5 and adults for $20. 

All proceeds are going to the Australian Red Cross.  

DALILA JAKUPOVIC HITS OUT AT AUSTRALIAN OPEN ORGANISERS AFTER COLLAPSING IN QUALIFYING

Slovenian player Dalila Jakupovic has hit out at Australian Open organisers after she collapsed and was forced to retire during the first round of qualifying on Tuesday. 

Jakupovic dropped to her knees with a coughing fit and panicked when she couldn't get up. She was forced out of her match against Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele after being up a set. 

Speaking to  Sporting News,  she said there had been no communication between organisers and players and said there should have been consultation with the playing group.
