Australian Open qualifying has just finished at Melbourne Park ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year

Qualifying was scheduled to take place between Tuesday, January 14 and Friday, January 17, although that was changed after bushfire smoke wrecked havoc on the first two days of matches.

Of the 128 players competing in qualifiers, 16 men and 16 women earned spots in the main draw of the 2020 Australian Open

Players hoping to advance to the Australian Open must win three qualifying matches in a knockout format.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN QUALIFYING NOTABLE RESULTS

American 30th seed Caroline Dolehide beat Georgia's Mariam Bolkvadze 6-3 6-2, while countrywoman Shelby Rogers beat Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4 6-0.

Eugenie Bouchard won a bizarre three-set match over China's Xiaodi You that lasted almost three hours. After dropping the first set, Bouchard came back to win a tiebreak in the second before receiving medical treatment. She was overheard saying something about her lungs.

Just as it seemed as though Bouchard was struggling, You began suffering from severe cramps. She was forced to serve underarm, could barely move around the court and hobbled around between points.

Both players offered in excess of 50 unforced errors each before Bouchard eventually prevailed 4-6 7-6(4) 6-1.

Embattled Aussie Bernard Tomic went out in straight sets to American Denis Kudla, losing 6-7, 3-7. The 27-year-old was overlooked for a wildcard entry after his ugly fallout with Tennis Australia. He called for medical attention midway through the second set after struggling to breathe.

Latvian former world number 10 Ernests Gulbis overcame Maxime Cressy 6-3 6-3, while former world number 26, Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic overcame France's Tristan Lamisine 6-4 6-3.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN QUALIFYING AND PRACTISE DELAYED DUE TO BUSHFIRE SMOKE

Qualifying was pushed back an hour after bad smoke haze from the bushfires hung over Melbourne on Tuesday morning and again on Wednesday.

As a result, the tournament delayed the start of qualifying by an hour, with matches getting underway at 11am. On Wednesday, play was pushed back until 1pm.

"Practice was temporarily suspended this morning due to poor air quality," the statement read.

"Qualifying matches will begin at 11am.

"Conditions onsite are improving and are being constantly monitored.

"Further decisions will be made using onsite data and in close consultation with our medical team, the Bureau of Meteorology and scientists from EPA Victoria.

"As always the health and safety of our players, our staff and our fans is our priority."
