Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has hung up the racquet after being defeated by Tunisia's Ons Jabeur in three sets.

Wozniacki made the announcement in December that she would retire after the Australian Open.

Whilst the 2017 Australian Open champion avoided elimination in the opening two rounds, it was third times' the charm after failing to overcome Jabeur, who would go on to win 7-5 3-6 7-5.

It would look like Wozniacki would stroll into the fourth round after taking the first three games of the set.

However, Jabeur would hit back immediately, breaking her serve and taking the first set 7-5.

With her back against the wall, the Dane would find a way to break the Jabeur serve, sending it to a decider after taking the second set 6-4.

From here, Jabeur appeared to have the game wrapped up, breaking in the second game of the set to take a 3-0 lead.

But once again, Wozniacki found a way back into the contest, starving off multiple breakpoints attempts and sealing her own in order to get the game back on serve,

With the game set to go into a final tie-breaker, the world number 78 would win four points in a row to claim the set and put an end to Wozniacki's career.

The enormity of the situation appeared to hit the Dane after the match, breaking down after the match.

Jabuer was full of praise for her opponent after the match, pleased to have played her in her final match.

"I'm really happy that I played you," she said post-match.

"You are such an inspiration for me and for many players, and I've been lucky enough to be on tour with you."

It continued the wave of tributes from players, with world number one Ash Barty leading the way.

Wozniaki was in good spirits after the match, thanking the crowd for their support.

"I think it was only fitting that my last match would be a three-setter, a grinder and that I would finish my career with a forehand error," she joked.

"The fans, the feelings that you guys give us players when we're out here feels really amazing.

"It's been really amazing, it's been a great ride."
