Ash Barty is a confirmed starter for the revamped 2020 edition of the Adelaide International in January.

The current world number one is locked in alongside former world number one Simona Halep for the season opening tournament in South Australia.

Barty is coming off a breakout year in which she won her debut Grand Slam at the French Open, before climbing to the top of the WTA rankings.

Barty and others will use the tournament as preparation for the Australian Open, which begins later in January.

With massive amounts of support in Australia, Barty's name was at the top of the list of targets for Adelaide International organiser Alistair McDonald.

"(We are) really excited that Ash has chosen to play here in Adelaide, now we've got the world number five in Simona Halep and the world number one in Ash Barty, we've got some really exciting names over the coming months to name as well," he said.

"I think it's a testament to the city and the proximity of the centre court and the venue to the city and the preparation for the players for the Australian Open.

"We're really thrilled that she has chosen Adelaide as part of her preparation."

With no Sydney International due to the ATP Cup, Barty is jumping at the chance to take to the courts on Memorial Drive in the South Australian capital.

“I’m excited to play in the first tournament in Adelaide,” Barty said.

“Memorial Drive has so much history in Australian tennis and I can’t wait to play at the new Adelaide International. It’s going to be a great event and it’s always special to be part of something new.

“Alicia (Molik) grew up playing and training at Memorial Drive and the redevelopment sounds amazing. It’s great to see our tennis facilities improving across the country and I’m sure the fans will come out and support us.

“I’m expecting the field to be super competitive and I’m looking forward to finalising my Australian Open preparations in Adelaide.”

The Adelaide International will run from the 11th to the 18th of January and will see WTA and ATP events in action.

Rising Canadian sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime has already been announced as an entrant in the men's draw.

“I am really looking forward to playing in Adelaide in January,” Auger-Aliassime said.

“I have always enjoyed visiting Australia, but I haven’t visited Adelaide before, so I am thrilled to be playing the first Adelaide International.

“I have heard that the climate in Adelaide is very similar to Melbourne, so I think that this tournament will be the perfect preparation for the Australian Open.”
