Alex de Minaur vs. Alexander Zverev result: Aussie misses opportunity at Indian Wells image

Alex de Minaur will rue missed opportunities after being defeated by Alexander Zverev in the fourth round at Indian Wells.

The Australia was up a set and break before the world no.6 clawed back the match to win 5-7 6-2 6-3 in two hours, 47 minutes.

Zverev now faces world no.2 Carlos Alcaraz - the man he defeated in the Australian Open last eight - in the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals.

But De Minaur will be disappointed he wasn't able to continue his impressive season, especially after being in a winning position.

The 10th-ranked Aussie snared the first set 7-5 despite failing to serve it out at 5-4 and needing to break again the following game.

When De Minaur broke a frustrated Zverev in the opening game of the second set, he looked like steamrolling to victory.

But the German got the break of serve immediately back the following the game, broke the Australian in the sixth game, before clinching the set 6-2.

De Minaur steadied in the third set and created three break point opportunities on Zverev's serve in the opening games.

However, the Aussie failed to take the opportunities, allowing Zverev to break in the sixth game once again and eventually serve the match out.

After winning the Mexican Open and reaching the final at Rotterdam, it will be disappointing for De Minaur to fall short of the latter stages at the Indian Wells Masters, going out at the same stage as he did at the Australian Open.

Zverev will fancy his chances against Alcaraz, having won five of their eight encounters, including a four-set victory at Melbourne Park earlier this year.
