Alex de Minaur out of US Open: Daniil Medvedev crushes Aussie in fourth round despite slow start image

Alex de Minaur has been crushed by world No.3 Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round of the US Open - despite a fast start by the Australian.

The Aussie 24-year-old was aiming to equal his career-best result at a grand slam, but was no match for Russia's US Open 2021 winner.

The Sporting News has all the details from the match.

De Minaur destroyed by Medvedev despite hot start

After winning the first set comfortably, it looked like being a good night for De Minaur.

But after some clever moments to regroup, Medvedev cruised through the rest of the match winning the fourth-round contest 2-6 6-4 6-1 6-2 in two hours, 42 minutes.

The Russian will play countryman Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, with his opponent never being past that stage at a major.

De Minaur dominant before Medvedev gamesmanship

De Minaur started the match confident and took it to the Russian third seed, with games staying on serve until 2-2 in the first set.

The Australian then broke Medvedev twice to secure the first set 6-2, with the Russian appearing to be on the back foot.

Medvedev, entirely within the rules, engineered two periods of rest for himself during De Minaur's dominance.

First, he took an injury timeout for a doctor to bring him an asthma puffer between the service breaks in the first set.

Then after the conclusion of the first set, Medvedev took a lengthy bathroom break.

The Russian refocused after these breaks and dominated the rest of the match.

Medvedev claws back and puts the foot down

In a tight tussle in the second set, Medvedev didn't concede a break point and secured it 6-4 after breaking De Minaur in the 10th game.

This seemed to break the Australian's spirit, as Medvedev secured a double break in the third set to clinch it 6-1.

De Minaur did fight back briefly in the fourth set, forcing break points on multiple occasions on Medvedev's serve.

But the Aussie failed to capitalise and Medvedev secured a double break once again, before closing the match out 6-2.
