Ajla Tomljanović has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a comeback win over Alizé Cornet.

The 29-year-old defeated the French veteran 4-6 6-4 6-3 in a hard-fought match that lasted two hours and 36 minutes.

In doing so, she becomes the first Australian woman to make consecutive final eight appearances at the All England Club since Jelena Dokic in 2000.

It was never going to be an easy match against an experienced Cornet, who two days earlier beat world No. 1 Iga Świątek in a stunning third round upset.

Tomljanović was able to maintain her composure after losing the first set, pushing the match to a deciding set.

She then broke her opponent's serve four times in the final set, securing the victory with her third match point opportunity.

The Australian was emotional in her post-match interview and reflected on her 2021 Wimbledon tournament where she lost to eventual champion Ash Barty in the quarter-finals.

"I didn't really think I could do it," Tomljanović said.

"I didn't know if I could keep up my physicality and she (Cornet) never goes away.

"I've got such great memories from last year and I look back at that week a year ago and I think I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have."

Tomljanović will now face Elena Rybakina in the final eight, with the young Kazakhstani player defeating Petra Martic 7-5 6-3 in the round of 16.

Rybakina will be slightly favoured coming into the quarter-final on Wednesday, having won the pair's only past encounter when they faced off in Madrid last year.

It was a mixed day for the other three Australians in action in the round of 16.

Nick Kyrgios won a five-set thriller against Brandon Nakashima, setting up a quarter-final clash with Cristian Garín.

Garín, incidently, was the player who defeated Alex de Minaur, preventing an all-Australian quarter-final.

The 23-year-old gave up a two-set lead and a couple of match point opportunities to fall in five sets.

Jason Kubler was also bundled out, losing in straight sets to No. 11 seed Taylor Fritz, but exits having achieved his best-ever finish at a Grand Slam tournament.
