Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus has set a new world record in the 400m freestyle at the Australian championships in Adelaide.

Titmus broke American great Katie Ledecky's old mark on the final night of competition in Adelaide, posting a time of 3:56.40.

The previous record of 3:56.46 had stood since Ledecky claimed the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Titmus' previous best in the event was a time of 3:56.69 which she set on her way to winning gold in Tokyo.

The 21-year-old Tasmanian also took out the 200m freestyle at the championships.

Titmus' coach, Dean Boxall, who shot to fame for his antics during her races in Tokyo, was up to his old tricks in Adelaide.
