FA Cup third round: Australians to watch including Postecoglou, Luongo, Silvera image

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is among several Australians hoping to win the FA Cup in 2023-24, with the third round commencing on January 5.

Postecoglou and Spurs are realistic chances to lift the FA Cup trophy, but first the North London club must negotiate Premier League opposition Burnley.

Several Australian players in England's lower leagues will also be keen to see their team move into the latter stages of the tournament.

Australians to watch in the FA Cup third round

Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham) vs. Burnley

The Australian tactician has taken England by storm with the attractive football he has Tottenham playing.

Spurs have won four of their last five Premier League games and sit in fifth on the table.

Tottenham will be favourites to win against Burnley in the FA Cup, especially considering their opposition have only won three of their 20 Premier League games this season.

Massimo Luongo, Cameron Burgess (Ipswich) vs. AFC Wimbledon

Two Australians - Massimo Luongo and Cameron Burgess - have played a key role in Ipswich's rise, with the Championship club sitting second on the table, 10 points clear of third.

Luongo has returned to his best in a midfield role, while Burgess is a starting central defender, who has recently broken into the Socceroos squad.

Despite being away from home, Ipswich will be confident of a FA Cup third-round win against League Two club AFC Wimbledon.

Sam Silvera, Riley McGree, Tom Glover (Middlesbrough) vs. Aston Villa

With the strongest Australian contingent in the FA Cup, Championship side Middlesbrough will be hoping to spring an upset when they host Premier League flyers Aston Villa.

While mainly used a super sub for Boro, Sam Silvera has been solid since leaving Central Coast Mariners, scoring four goals and getting three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

Riley McGree has been mainly used as a starter in his time on Teeside, but has been injured since early October.

However, the playmaker has returned to action in a timely boost ahead of the FA Cup third round.

Former Melbourne City stopper Tom Glover is the second choice goalkeeper, but has played in the EFL Cup for Michael Carrick's team and could be their cup option.

Harry Souttar (Leicester) vs. Millwall

It's been a hard luck story for Harry Souttar, who was signed to Brendan Rodgers' Leicester Premier League side last season, but now finds himself out of favour under a new manager in the Championship.

The Socceroos starting centre-back has only made four appearances in all competitions as Leicester lead the Championship by eight points from Ipswich.

However, there is a chance the Foxes will use the FA Cup to rotate their squad and we could see Souttar given an opportunity.

Nectarios Triantis (Sunderland) vs. Newcastle United

It's been a meteoric rise for Nectarios Triantis, going from Central Coast Mariners reserves to Sunderland back-up in only two seasons.

While he hasn't made many appearances this season, the central defender performed admirably on his Championship debut, forcing a Birmingham City own goal in a 3-1 win.

There is a possibility Tony Mowbray might rotate his squad for a cup match, but Sunderland are hosting derby rivals Newcastle United, so the occasion might call for a best 11.

In any case, Triantis is a talent that will be in the Socceroos squad before the next World Cup.

Kenny Dougall (Blackpool) vs. Nottingham Forest

The defensive midfielder, who has been capped five times for the Socceroos, is a regular starter for Blackpool in League One.

However, Blackpool face a tough trip to Premier League side Nottingham Forest in a bid to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

Nicholas Bilokapic (Peterborough United) vs. Leeds United

Sydney United youth talent Nicholas Bilokapic is the starting goalkeeper for League One side Peterborough United, who are second on the table.

The 21-year-old has 10 clean sheets in 24 league games and will be hoping to snare another blank against Championship side Leeds United in the FA Cup.

Other Australians who could feature in FA Cup third round

  • Jack Iredale (Bolton Wanderers)
  • Dean Bouzanis (Sutton United)
  • Matthew MacArthur (Gillingham)
  • Ryley D'Sena (Chesterfield)
  • Lewis Miccio (Oxford City)

When is the FA Cup third round?

Third round ties will take place across five days from Friday, January 5 to Tuesday, January 9, 2024 (AEDT).

If games finish level, the away team will host a replay in the week commencing January 14. In the event of teams finishing the replay all square, 30 minutes of extra time will be played. If they are still level the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.
