England vs. Senegal final score, result: Henderson, Kane and Saka strike to book spot vs. France in quarterfinals image

England booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup and a meeting with world champions France thanks to three superb goals that saw off Senegal.

Jordan Henderson’s opener, where he converted a Jude Bellingham cross, set England on their way after a tricky spell during which Ismaila Sarr missed a glorious chance from close range.

Harry Kane followed that up with fierce shot before half-time that saw England’s skipper, and the 2018 Golden Boot winner, get off the mark in Qatar.

Another slick move led to the third, with Phil Foden looking up from the left flank to pick out Bukayo Saka inside the area to make it 3-0.

England were comfortable once Henderson’s goal had settled them down, and now Gareth Southgate’s men head into the last eight as top scorers for the tournament with a mouth-watering clash ahead of them.

England vs Senegal live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

England fans can start to plot a path to glory...

I'm old enough to remember the grim struggles England had in front of goal in 1986 and 1990. Happy days!

FULL TIME: England are in the quarter-finals, after a tricky opening spell they made that look very easy.

93 mins: Bamba Dieng slams a free kick into the wall then Senegal win their first corner of the match. England clear - it's nearly all over.

90 mins: Four minutes to be added on, and as we enter them Marcus Rashford puts a Luke Shaw cross inti the side-netting at the far post.

84 mins: England have only conceded twice so far, those annoying goals against Iran, but France's attacking strength next Saturday will be a very different story to what they have coped with so far.

Take a look at Saka's goal - US only

79 mins: Nearly a fourth as Marcus Rashford sends in a low cross from the right that Harry Kane is just short of reaching with an outstretched leg. Think Gazza in 1996 - except this time, England are nearly home and dry.

76 mins: Harry Kane is clattered by Kalidou Koulibaly, who is booked. Kane writhes around for a bit, maybe it's worth removing him from the fray to protect him?

73 mins: Senegal get a free kick, and Pape Matar Sarr whips it low around the wall, but Jordan Pickford merely watches it roll wide into his side-netting.

68 mins: England have scored 12 goals at Qatar 2022 so far: take a look at the 12th (UK only)

66 mins: Henderson soldiers on - Foden and Saka made way just earlier.

Start making plans for England v France next Saturday.

63 mins: This should be a stroll now, and Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford are coming on. Worryingly, Jordan Henderson has gone down clutching his knee.

GOAAAAALLLLLLLL! England 3-0 Senegal - Bukayo Saka!

Sublime stuff again, as Phil Foden shoots down the left flank before picking out Saka in the middle with a lovely pass. Saka just has to dink the ball over Mendy from close range - game over, surely?

55 mins: Harry Kane chances his arm from distance, his low shot being stopped by Edouard Mendy, although it squeezes out worryingly.

53 mins: Declan Rice feeds Harry Kane, he then finds Bukayo Saka allowing him to shoot, but it flies high over the bar.

It feels very comfortable for England right now.

49 mins: Pape Matar Sarr shoots from distance but it bounces down into the ground and goes well wide.

46 mins: We are back under way, how do Senegal drag this back? They were good around the 30-minute mark but chasing the game is a different beast.

Goal 2 - US only

Goal 1 - UK only

Our kid, eh? Bellingham is still short of his 20th birthday!

HALF TIME: What a last 10 minutes from England, in the bag now?

GOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLL! England 2-0 Senegal - Harry Kane is off the mark in Qatar!

Another superb move sees England break away, Phil Foden is free on the left but he picks out Kane on the other side and after steadying himself, the skipper lashes the ball past the keeper's right.

45 mins: There are just two minutes being added on.

That was Jordan Henderson's third goal for his country - less is more, I always say.

43 mins: That has settled England down, then Luke Shaw races to the by-line to win a corner that England can't make anything of - but they are in control now.

GOOOOAALLLLLLLLL! England 1-0 Senegal - Jordan Henderson!

A superb move, Jude Bellingham scoots down the left, looks up and sees the Liverpool skipper moving into the box. His pass goes behind a defender, and Henderson side-foots it low into the bottom corner.

35 mins: Ismaila Sarr is hauled back by Kyle Walker with a shirt tug - he's lucky not to be booked, and Sarr is furious.

34 mins: Senegal enjoying their best spell at the moment - Ismail Jakobs harries the defence near the corner flag. England are losing possession on a regular basis.

31 mins: FINE SAVE! Boulaye Dia latches onto a Saka mistake and shoots with his left across goal. Jordan Pickford flings out his left arm and parries it away.

28 mins: It is getting niggly - Nampalys Mendy and Bakayo Saka have an argument after the former is felled in midfield. They will know each other from the Premier League, maybe there's a bit of previous history?

26 mins: Jordan Pickford is a good 10 metres out of his area with the ball at his feet. His defence have given the ball away a few times of late, it's been a sloppy phase from England.

22 mins: Ismaila Sarr latches onto a loose ball in England's area and skies his shot over, but Senegal are convinced John Stones handled it in the build up!

VAR checks, it's waved away and we go on, but England wobbled there.

20 mins: Phil Foden whips in a corner at John Stones nods it past the near post. He's fuming - he knows he should have hit the target from there.

Video available in US :

14 mins: Aliou Cisse is off his seat and issuing highly animated instructions to his Senegal side. He plied his trade with Birmingham City and Portsmouth in the early 2000s.

11 mins: Harry Kane sends a gorgeous ball across the goal from the left, and Bukayo Saka is just short of reaching it in the six yard box.

England are firmly in control here.

9 mins: Jude Bellingham's cross skims across the face of goal - all it needs is a touch but there's no white shirt near it.

7 mins: Jude Bellingham causes a nuisance to win a free kick about 40 metres out. Kyle Walker sends the ball across to Declan Rice, who volleys it back across to Harry Maguire but his header is blocked. A decent, well thought-out move, though.

5 mins: Boulaye Dia gets in between Harry Maguire and John Stones in the area, but Maguire's knee saves the day to take the ball away from the Senegalese striker.

3 mins: It's a sensational sound in the stadium, mostly from Senegal's fans - a lot more musical than some of the earlier games. Jordan Henderson lifts a pass towards Phil Foden, but he can't get to it as it rolls out for a goal kick.

1 mins: Senegal already have England under pressure, with Jordan Pickford slicing a kick away into touch after a testing back-pass.

Kickoff: We are under way, with England sporting all white while Senegal have donned their second kit, which is all green.

2 mins to kickoff: Stirring stuff all round, and now we are just seconds away from this mouthwatering clash.

5 mins to kickoff: The teams emerge from the tunnel, and we are all set for the national anthems.

8 mins to kickoff: England's subs are giving high-fives galore to the starting 11 in the tunnel. The atmosphere in the stadium is building, this could be a cracker.

15 mins to kickoff: Senegal have the chance to make history tonight - England have never lost to an African side at the World Cup, stretching back to 1986 when Morocco held them 0-0.

22 mins to kickoff: Gareth Southgate tells ITV he has been dealing with Raheem Sterling and his family matter but will not be drawn upon what it is. He also says that Saka deserved his opportunity, but admits he has an embarrassment of riches in that area.

25 mins to kickoff

40 mins to kickoff: ......and Michael Owen's first World Cup last 16 appearance was memorable, even if he ended on the losing side.

45 mins to kickoff: That must be a tough call for Marcus Rashford after two goals against Wales, but Gareth Southgate will have a strong bench at his disposal tonight.

1 hr 7 mins to kickoff: Senegal's team is in: E Mendy, Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs, Sarr, Ciss, N Mendy, Diatta, Ndiaye, Dia.

1 hr 15 to kickoff: England's team for tonight: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Bellingham, Henderson, Foden, Saka, Kane.

Just the one change as Marcus Rashford makes way for Bukayo Saka.

1 hr 25 mins to kickoff: Breaking news - Raheem Sterling is not available tonight

1 hrs 40 from kickoff: Perfect conditions await the teams in Al Khor, which begins at 22:00 p.m local time inside the Al Bayt Stadium.

1 hrs 45 from kickoff: Several reports are emerging that Southgate has chosen to drop Marcus Rashford from his starting XI, favouring Bukayo Saka instead. Phil Foden is apparently also preferred to Raheem Sterling. Not long to go until we'll get confirmed lineups from Qatar...

2 hrs 5 from kickoff: So that's it confirmed, world champions France will be the opposition awaiting England or Senegal in the quarter-finals. Les Blues send Poland home after another Kylian Mbappe masterclass. Two goals for the PSG man, one for Giroud and a consolation for Robert Lewandowski as France beat Poland 3-1.

2 hrs 30 from kickoff: The fight for a starting spot in England's attack is fierce, with several candidates showing excellent form. Marcus Rashford has only made one start but is already in the Golden Boot fight with three goals. Phil Foden looked sharp against Wales, after a Southgate snub for the two opening games. Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish can all make compelling arguments to start too.

2 hrs 45 from kickoff: France are leading 1-0 against Poland with 30 minutes left to play, thanks to an Olivier Giroud strike just before half-time. As it stands, France await for England or Senegal in the quarter-finals. Follow the action from France v Poland with The Sporting News.

3 hrs 15 from kickoff: At this stage in Russia four years ago, Harry Kane had scored five goals and was dominating the Golden Boot race. Now, the England captain has yet to get off the mark in Qatar. England were careful to play-down the foot injury Kane has been carrying, but the striker is insistent he's fit and ready.

"I had a knock in the first game but it’s getting better day by day, I almost don’t feel it at all," Kane said in the build-up to England's last-16 match. "I feel I’m playing well. Hopefully I can get off the mark tomorrow.”

3 hrs 25 from kickoff: Senegal have only appeared two previous World Cups but topping their first will take some doing in Qatar. If anyone can, it's surely the AFCON champions' coach, Aliou Cisse.

Cisse was Senegal's captain at the 2002 World Cup, when the Lions of Teranga beat a France team featuring Thierry Henry and Marcel Desailly, held Denmark and Uruguay, stunned Sweden and finally fell to a narrow defeat against Turkey in the quarter-finals.

4 hrs from kickoff: It will be either France or Poland waiting for the winner of Senegal vs England in the quarter-finals. Kylian Mbappe dazzled in the group stages but Robert Lewandowski will be fired-up and gunning for Les Blues' defence in his final World Cup. France vs Poland has kicked-off in Qatar, and you can track all the action with The Sporting News.

4 hrs 15 from kickoff: Phil Foden is looking red-hot in training, after Gareth Southgate finally started the Man City ace against Wales. Foden rewarded the Three Lions coach with a goal, and he'll be pushing to start again in the last-16. Could Senegal handle footwork like this?

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: A bit of perspective from the Senegalese point of view. There's a conviction they can beat England:

5 hrs from kickoff: Sky Sports reports that Bukayo Saka will be starting for England, which will see either Marcus Rashford or Phil Foden return to the bench:
