England Euro 2024 squad: Gareth Southgate's chosen players for final national team roster for UEFA tournament image

England head coach Gareth Southgate has finalised his plans for Euro 2024.

Southgate used the pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina to assess his options and a final call has now been made, with experienced defender Harry Maguire ruled out with a calf problem, and James Maddison and Jack Grealish omitted.

Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson were the other eye-catching names who had earlier been left out of England’s preliminary squad.

Manchester United forward Rashford and former Liverpool captain Henderson have been mainstays of the Southgate era and were influential as England reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Since then, Rashford's form has collapsed at Man United to the extent that he lost his starting spot in Erik ten Hag’s injury-hit squad, although he did play from the off in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Henderson made a controversial switch from Liverpool to Al Ettifaq last summer. He featured in England squads over the past season but his transfer to Ajax in January, after an unhappy six months in the Saudi Pro League, was not enough to save his spot.

Southgate was required to remove seven players from his provisional squad to meet the UEFA final deadline of Friday, June 7.

Maguire, Grealish and Maddison were joined in missing out by Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite.

England Euro 2024 squad and player roster

England's biggest attacking stars, Harry KaneJude BellinghamPhil Foden, and Bukayo Saka, are all in the final squad.

Strikers Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney also kept their places from the provisional roster, so scoring goals is not expected to be a major problem for the Three Lions. The concern lies at the other end of the pitch.

With Maguire sidelined, John Stones struggling for fitness and Luke Shaw having not played since February, England's defence is looking makeshift and potentially suspect. Iceland counter-attacked with ease in their friendly win at Wembley, which also highlighted issues in terms of midfield structure. If that persists, Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton could find himself thrust into the side.

How many players are in Euro 2024 squads?

On May 3, 2024, UEFA's executive committee confirmed national teams would be able to name 26 players in their Euro 2024 squads.

This was the number allowed due to the impact of COVID-19 upon Euro 2020, while the FIFA World Cup taking place in the middle of the 2022/23 European season meant larger squads were also permitted.

UEFA intended to revert to a 23-man limit for Euro 2024 but the national competitions committee voting in favour of 26-man squads forced a rethink.

Can England replace players on Euro 2024 roster?

Replacements can be made on the grounds of illness or injury up until June 13, the day before the tournament starts.

Once Euro 2024 begins, teams must find solutions from within their 26-man squads.
