Canada came so agonizingly close to an historic result, going in front with 10 minutes to go in regulation, but couldn't hold on as they fall to Uruguay in the third place match at the 2024 Copa America on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw.

Rodrigo Betancur's early goal had Uruguay feeling strong, but Ismael Kone's gorgeous overhead flick brought Canada back level before halftime.

After both sides had rung all their substitutions, Jonathan David came in off the bench and put Canada in front in the 80th minute, completing the comeback and looking as if Les Rouges would be through with a podium finish at their first-ever Copa America.

But it was not to be, as substitute Luis Suarez, likely in his final Copa America, dramatically equalized in the 92nd minute and forced a penalty shootout, where poor efforts from Ismael Kone (saved) and Alphonso Davies (missed) gave Uruguay the ultimate victory.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch once again inspired a valiant effort from his side who went toe-to-toe with mighty Uruguay despite a rotated lineup, but the late collapse was also a touch of their own doing. They refused to sit back and protect the lead once David put them in front, and the game remained wide open and frantic, which ultimately saw Suarez equalize late.

Round 5

Canada — For Canada, Alphonso Davies has to score, and he...MISSES! Oh no! Canada's captain goes for the Panenka and he clips it off the crossbar! It had worked, as Rochet dove early, but the ball pings the woodwork and Uruguay win the shootout!

Round 4

Canada — Hoping to keep Les Rouges in it is midfielder Mathieu Choiniere, who...SCORES! An emphatic finish to level the score!

Uruguay — Stepping up fourth is Luis Suarez who can put the pressure on Canada, and he...SCORES! It's powered inside the right post and home!

Round 3

Canada — Third taker for Canada is Ismael Kone who put Les Rouges in front 2-1 in regulation, and it's...SAVED! He goes for the stutter-step but it's an awful penalty, extremely weak and placed poorly on the ground, and Sergio Rochet guesses correctly!

HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Watch in Canada

Uruguay — To try for the lead for Uruguay is Giorginio De Arrescaeta who...SCORES! He slams it home and Uruguay are in front of the shootout!

Round 2

Canada — Now for Canada is young defender Moise Bombito, who...well hold up, before the penalty Dayne St. Clair receives a yellow card who knows what. That was weird! Ok, now for Bombito's penalty, after that delay, the youngster...SCORES! He sends Rochet the wrong way with a late stutter-step!

Uruguay — Next for Uruguay is Rodrigo Betancur who...SCORES! Holy cow what a blast! The Tottenham man pummels the ball with venom into the top-left corner!

Round 1

Canada — Jonathan David steps up first for the CONCACAF nation, and he...SCORES! He sends Sergio Rochet the wrong way!

Uruguay — First for Uruguay is Federico Valverde, and the Real Madrid man...SCORES! Dayne St. Clair guesses correctly, but the strike is placed too close to the post for him to reach it!

FULLTIME: Canada 2-2 Uruguay

We're going to a penalty shootout! Canada's continued high intensity can't maintain the lead, and this will be decided from the spot!

90+2 min: GOAL! URUGUAY! LUIS SUAREZ EQUALIZES FOR URUGUAY IN STOPPAGE TIME OF HIS FINAL COPA AMERICA MATCH! The 37-year-old, who is the all-time leading goal scorer for his country, has blasted a cross from Jose Gimenez on the right into the back of the net!

Canada only have themselves to blame for having remained so open at the back despite holding the lead late!

Watch in Canada:

85th min: Rodrigo Betancur is booked for a clumsy tactical foul, literally falling over backwards onto the back of Jonathan David's legs to stop the Canada forward from having a breakaway on the Uruguay goal.

80th min: GOAL! CANADA! The CONCACAF side is in front with just 10 minutes to go as Jonathan David puts Les Rouges into the lead! Ismael Kone charges through the middle of the pitch with nobody stepping to him, and finally once he's closed down, he skips around the defender and takes a shot. The powerful effort is saved relatively simply by Sergio Rochet, but he palms it right into the path of David who buries the scuffed rebound in!

Watch in Canada:

78th min: Both sides are pressing for an equalizer and have come very close to finding the moment. Ismael Kone is booked. Canada make their final two changes as Liam Millar and Thelonius Bair enter for Ali Ahmed and Jonathan Osorio.

67th min: More changes for both sides. The two booked Canadians are withdrawn as Luc De Fougerolles and Tani Oluwaseyi are hauled off and replaced by Derek Cornelius and Jonathan David. Uruguay see Lucas Olaza brought on as the final substitution for Marcelo Bielsa, replacing the booked Matias Vina.

63rd min: Tani Oluwaseyi is now booked for a nasty challenge as he steps on Sebastian Caceres who slides to clear a ball.

Both sides make changes. Jesse Marsch withdraws Alistair Johnston to bring on Alphonso Davies in aggressive change, while Uruguay see Brian Rodriguez and Cristian Olivera enter the match to replace Facundo Pellistri and Maxi Araujo.

60th min: Chance, Canada! Tani Oluwaseyi has missed a ton of chances in this match, and he gets clean through on goal here but gets stonewalled by Sergio Rochet!

HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Watch in Canada

2nd half kickoff: Into the match for Uruguay is Luis Suarez, who is almost surely playing in his final Copa America match and could even be playing in his last international game at 37 years old, replacing Darwin Nunez. Giorgian De Arrascaeta also enters the match replacing Manuel Ugarte, an attacking swap for Marcelo Bielsa.

No changes for Canada just yet, but you imagine Luc De Fougerolles will be a candidate to be subbed off thanks to his early booking.

HALFTIME: Canada 1-1 Uruguay

An eventful first half sees the sides level at halftime. Uruguay will consider themselves exceptionally lucky to still have 11 players on the pitch after Matias Vina's clear red card challenge goes down as just a booking.

Canada did well, but they have some issues to contend with. Luc De Fougerolles did not play well in that half, both picking up a yellow card just seven minutes in and largely at fault for the Uruguay goal. They nearly conceded again just moments after equalizing but were saved by the offside flag. They have some concerns to alleviate.

26th min: A second yellow card is shown in this first half, this one to a Uruguay player as Matias Vina is booked for a really ugly challenge way over the ball with his studs onto the shins of De Fougerolles. That has to be a red card, but VAR looks at it for a moment and lets them play on. An astonishing decision — that's a clear red card challenge.

HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA

24th min: Chance, Uruguay! The CONMEBOL nation believed it had gone back in front right away, but the offside flag is up! It's the right call as Facundo Pellistri put the ball in the net but Maxi Araujo is correctly punished for leaning over the line as he was fed through on the chance.

HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Watch in Canada

22nd min: GOAL! CANADA! Ismael Kone levels up the match on a corner! That's a SENSATIONAL goal by the Canadian midfielder who takes a header back into the mixer from Moise Bombito and produces a delicious little flick with his foot up over his head! It's a brilliant finish by Kone!

Watch in Canada:

18th min: Chance, Uruguay! Max Araujo sees a breakaway one-on-one chance saved by Dayne St. Clair! That's a stunning stop!

HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Watch in Canada

8th min: GOAL! URUGUAY! The South American side takes an early lead as Rodrigo Bentancur powers home a set-piece goal! The delivery came in and met the head of Sebastian Caceres who flicked it to Bentancur at the far post who was all alone. De Fougerolles had completely lost his man, and Betancur made him pay!

Watch in USA:

Watch in Canada:

7th min: Canada teenager Luc De Fougerolles is booked for a hard foul on Max Araujo, which includes a late scissor tackle. A deserved booking for the 18-year-old who has to be careful now.

Kickoff: The match is under way! Third place doesn't mean much from a tangible perspective, but it means a ton to these players and coaches who will want to prove they are worthy of a place on the podium!

Canada vs. Uruguay lineups, team news, starting 11

CanMNT boss Jesse Marsch confirmed star man Alphonso Davies's x-rays were "negative" after he suffered a foot injury in Tuesday's semifinal defeat to Argentina, but it remains unclear if he would be able to feature in Saturday's game. It felt unlikely he would be involved, and sure enough he's not in the starting lineup.

In fact, Marsch has decided to heavily rotate his squad after he bemoaned his own lack of rotation through the tournament proper. Dayne St. Clair is brought into net, while Tani Oluwaseyi comes in at striker and Luc De Fougerolles comes into the back line. The likes of Jonathan David and Stephen Eustaquio are rested as a result.

Otherwise Marsch should have a full squad available, with only Tajon Buchanan set to miss Saturday's clash. The Inter Milan star broke his tibia while training for the quarterfinal clash against Venezuela and subsequently missed the semifinal clash against Argentina. He underwent a successful surgery in the following days and while he eventually joined his teammates, he won't be available at Marsch’s disposal.

Toronto FC's Richie Laryea replaced him against Argentina and will likely keep his place at right wing, with Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David rounding out the attack.

Canada starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): St. Clair (GK) — Johnston, Bombito, De Fougerolles, Laryea — Osorio, Kone — Choiniere, Ahmed, Shaffelburg — Oluwayesi.

Canada subs: Crepeau (GK), McGill (GK), Cornelius, Waterman, Miller, Hiebert, Davies, Millar, Piette, Eustaquio, Russel-Rowe, Bair, Larin, David.

A major talking point following the brawl after Uruguay's semifinal defeat to Colombia was to see if CONMEBOL's review of the post-match incident following their semifinal vs. Colombia to see if any players would be investigated, and subsequently banned. Darwin NunezManuel Ugarte, and Luis Suarez could be candidates for suspensions for their roles in the explosive post-match incidents, but no word has come down yet, so they are eligible to participate today, while suspensions could come down for World Cup qualifying.

Uruguay get a defensive boost for Saturday's third-place playoff game with Nahitan Nandez returning from suspension after he was made to take the walk of shame for a horrendous studs-up tackle on Rodrygo in the penalty shoot-out victory over Brazil in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Fellow defender and key Barcelona star Ronald Araujo lasted just 33 minutes in the same game before succumbing to a serious-looking leg injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament and for up to eight weeks; a devastating blow for both club and country. Rodrigo Betancur also exited the semifinal win early with an injury, but makes the starting lineup.

Uruguay starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Rochet (GK) — Nandez, Gimenez, Caceres, Vina — Valverde, Ugarte, Betancur — Pellistri, Nunez, M. Araujo.

Uruguay subs: Israel (GK), Mele (GK), Olaza, M. Olivera, Marichal, R. Araujo, E. Martinez, De Arascaeta, Canobbio, Ocampo, B. Rodriguez, C. Olivera, Suarez.

Canada vs. Uruguay stats, head-to-head record

These two sides have only met one time previously, with Uruguay coming away as 2-0 winners in a September 2022 friendly.

Nicolas de la Cruz opened the scoring six minutes into the match, and Darwin Nunez scored just past the half-hour mark to double the lead. From there, Uruguay cruised to victory while building their readiness for the 2022 World Cup to come later in the year.
