Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham is planning an ambitious move to re-sign Matt Giteau for the upcoming Super Rugby season.

Versatile Australia back Giteau has had two previous stints with the Canberra-based side, before joining Toulon in 2011.

Giteau announced via Instagram on Monday that the current season will be his last with the Top 14 giants, though, in order to play in Japan.

However, Larkham is hopeful that he can strike a deal for the 34-year-old to play in Super Rugby with Brumbies before he heads to Asia.

"Potentially, I'm always open to someone like Matt coming back," Larkham told the Canberra Times.

"He's a bit of a local legend and held in high respect among the boys. This generation really respects him and I'm sure they'd love to play with him.

"All options are open. I've spoken to Gits before about coming back to the timing hasn't quite worked. I know he's off contract with Toulon and has a bit of a break for Japan.

"It's a conversation I'll try to have with him in the next week. I've spoken to him about coming back through [Canberra] before going to Japan."
