Du Plessis: Springboks can win World Cup image

Former South Africa captain Morne Du Plessis believes the Springboks can still win the Rugby World Cup despite their shock loss to Japan.

The Springboks are under pressure early at the tournament after their shock 34-32 loss to Japan in their Pool B opener on Saturday.

Du Plessis is remaining positive despite the defeat and the 65-year-old, who played for his country 22 times, said World Cup glory was still possible.

"No reason that they can't, absolutely no reason that they can't," he said.

"You've got to have a little bit of luck, you've got to have the right selections, you've got to have the spirit.

"You've just got to look at what Japan achieved. It is achievable.

"If Japan can beat the Springboks, why can't the Springboks win the World Cup? We have almost got to look at it that way."

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer is under increasing pressure after the loss to Eddie Jones' men.

Du Plessis said Meyer would be hurt by the defeat, but he expects the Springboks to bounce back against Samoa on Saturday.

"I know the man [Meyer], he is intensely passionate, intensely proud and loyal to do well for South Africa. He will be hurting," he said.

"He has to show now that you can stand up from it, take the team with him, and [captain] Jean De Villiers, and they will. They are men of extreme character.

"And also, they can only play as well as the opposition will let them. We tend to look at how we are doing things wrong, rather than the others doing things well.

"And that's what happened on Saturday - the other team arrived better prepared, better motivated, did what they had to do better than we did and that's it."
