Cheika: Waratahs-Brumbies not World Cup audition image

Australia coach Michael Cheika claimed Rugby World Cup selection will be far from his mind when the Waratahs take on the Brumbies in Super Rugby on Friday.

Cheika, who is also coach of the Waratahs, will be looking for a fourth consecutive win over the Brumbies when they clash in Canberra.

The match, which sees the top two teams in the Australian Conference face off, has been dubbed by many pundits as an audition for the World Cup, with both sides full of potential Wallabies.

In particular, Australia captain Michael Hooper, who plays for Cheika's side, and David Pocock of the Brumbies are direct rivals for the Wallabies' openside flanker position.

"Obviously it's going to be a nice battle and that's what we want in rugby, we want to have those things to talk about and get excited about these types of match-ups," Cheika said at a media conference on Thursday.

"For me it's more about the complementary nature of the team or the pack that's been picked, so how does that looks along with your other back-rowers and locks etcetera.

"I can assure you that what happens tomorrow night is not going to decide who gets selected, there is definitely more than one game involved in any one selection process."

Cheika added he will be completely focused on helping the reigning champions overhaul the Brumbies on Friday rather than analysing potential World Cup picks.

"I won't on Friday night itself," the 48-year-old said.

"Afterwards on the tape I will take a look at it in a different context.

"Not because they're playing their rivals for different positions but it's good quality opposition against each other and that's when you want to see your top players perform."
