Russian rugby sevens' captain Alena Mikhaltsova has been handed an eight-game suspension after appearing to kick out at the head of Australian Evania Pelite on Saturday.

After falling 12-0 behind to the Aussies in their semi-final, Mikhaltsova lashed out at Pelite who was going for a low tackle just before half-time in a truly ugly act if intentional.

With the incident originally going unnoticed during the game and Pelite somehow avoiding serious injury, the Russian captain was eventually cited after the game and cops an eight-game ban.

Mikhaltsova has the option to challenge the charge but may count herself lucky to avoid the maximum 12-game suspension.

Australia would go on to win the semi-final 31-0 to set up a final showdown with New Zealand on Sunday.

Watch the ugly act below.
