Women's State of Origin is currently being played over a two-match series in 2023 for the first time in history.

Sydney and Townsville were announced as the host cities for this year's spectacle, with both matches taking place in June.

New South Wales are the reigning Women's Origin champions, but will Queensland be able to make their 1-0 advantage count?

The Sporting News takes a look at all the key details with one match remaining of this year's series.

Women's State of Origin 2023: Dates, schedule, venues

Both matches are taking place in the same month, with Game 1 held on Thursday, June 1, and Game 2 scheduled for Thursday, June 22.

Kick-off is 7:45 pm AEST for both matches.

No NRL games clash with either of those dates, meaning the Women's Origin series is taking centre stage.

New South Wales hoped to get their title defence off to a strong start when they hosted Queensland at CommBank Stadium in Sydney for the opener, but were unable to take the win.

The action now heads north of the border, with the second game to be held at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Women's State of Origin 2023 schedule

Match Date Time (AEST) Venue
Game 1 Thu. June 1 7:45 pm CommBank Stadium, Sydney
Game 2 Thu. June 22 7:45 pm Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Townsville

Why is there a second Women's Origin match?

Quite simply: because there's a demand for it.

For the first time ever, Women's State of Origin is taking place over a two-game series.

“There is a real appetite for women’s rugby league and State of Origin being the largest rivalry in Australian sport only underlines its popularity,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“I support the decision to move to a two-game series as the women’s game is rising in popularity every year. Since 2021, we have had record-breaking numbers with more than 20,000 female participants signing up every year to play the greatest game of all.”

What happens if the series ends in a draw?

This year's Women's Origin series victor is being decided on an aggregate score system.

Both game results will be tallied together to find a winner, similar to two-leg football/soccer ties typically seen in European cup competitions.

Despite NSW coming into 2023 as the reigning champions, a 1-1 series draw may not necessarily be enough to retain the shield.

Tickets for the final match are on general sale via NRL's official ticketing page.

Seats are priced from $20 for adults and $40 for families, while spectators aged under 15 can enter for free with a paying adult.
