Will Smith has been granted a release from his contract with the Gold Coast Titans.
In a short statement made on Friday, the club confirmed the 29-year-old will return to New South Wales.
The five-eighth and utility player requested a release on compassionate grounds.
Details behind the departure are unclear, with no suggestion he will move to a new club.
If he does search for a new team, he will need to sign a contract before the June 30 deadline, when clubs have to finalise their 30-player squads.
Smith debuted for the Penrith Panthers in 2014, playing 21 games with this club.
He then enjoyed a four-year stint with the Parramatta Eels between 2017 - 2021.
The Gold Coast Titans picked him up for 2022, where he made nine appearances before his release.
This season he came off the bench on six occasions, featuring as the starting five-eighth in three games.
