Veteran backrower Chris McQueen will depart the NRL after the Tigers confirmed on Friday he'd been released from the remainder of his contract.

The 33-year-old was contracted to the end of the season but will now take up a deal with a club in the English Super League.

"Wests Tigers have today confirmed that forward Chris McQueen has been released from the remainder of his playing contract, effective immediately," a statement read.

"McQueen will depart Wests Tigers to take up a deal with another club in Super League.

"The 33-year-old has played 10 NRL games with Wests Tigers since joining at the start of the 2018 season.

"Wests Tigers would like to thank Chris for his service to the club and wish him all the best in the future."

McQueen has played 164 NRL games since making his debut with South Sydney in 2009.

He would go on to play 118 games with the Rabbitohs, the highlight of his career coming when he was part of the 17 that took out the 2014 premiership.

He was capped six times by the Maroons as well as one international for England - qualifying through his father.

The Queenslander would join the Titans ahead of the 2016 season before heading to the Tigers two years later.

McQueen has made just one first-grade appearance in 2020, coming off the bench in the Tigers' round 10 demolition of Brisbane.

The decision to grant McQueen a release comes just a few days after club great five-eighth Benji Marshall was told he wouldn't be offered a new contract for 2021.

It's unclear if Marshall, 35, will play on next season, but it certainly won't be at the Tigers as they look to freshen up their roster after another season outside the top eight.
