Premiership star Tom Burgess has announced he will be leaving South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of the upcoming NRL season.

The 31-year-old will return home to England to join Super League side Huddersfield for the 2025 campaign.

Tom is the last of the three Burgess brothers to play in the NRL, with Sam retiring in 2019 due to a shoulder injury and George finishing at the Dragons in 2012.

Burgess to swap South Sydney for Huddersfield

Burgess, who has played 225 games for the Rabbitohs including the 2014 premiership, was happy to lock in his future but committed to being focused on success the Bunnies this season.

"I'm happy to know that my future is sorted but my immediate focus is on winning another premiership with South Sydney," Burgess said.

"We have a huge eight months ahead of us as we work towards our combined goal of winning our club's 22nd premiership.

"I'm excited about what's ahead here at Souths, and in England after that having the opportunity to take my young family back to the home land, but I won't be distracted from playing my role in my team throughout 2024.

"We're aiming to finish 2024 on the right note for the team, the club and the members."

Tom Burgess' NRL and rugby league career

Burgess will likely finish his Rabbitohs career as the club's second-most capped player, with his current 225 caps just shy of Adam Reynolds' 231 appearances, while both are a long way short of John Sutton's 336 games.

In 2014, Burgess won the NRL premiership with South Sydney alongside brothers Sam and George, with a 30-6 victory against Canterbury.

He has also amassed 33 Tests with his nation England.

When will Tom face his brother in the Super League?

Not until 2025, at the earliest. With brother Sam at the helm of Warrington, Tom will at some point face his brother’s side, who toppled Huddersfield 20-8 in the final round of the 2023 season.

"There's a lot of sliding doors moments in a career and this was one - things weren't working out at Souths, this came up and it all fell into place very quickly," Sam Burgess told the English press ahead of the new campaign getting underway against Catalans.

"I certainly wouldn't have picked this as what would have happened. But I don't mind that. I like being thrown in at the deep end. I didn't know if I'd come back here ever, so it's funny how things work out.”
