State of Origin: Kevin Walters expecting Origin to be refereed like an NRL match image

Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters is expecting the first match of this year's State of Origin series to be refereed like an NRL match after both he and Blues' coach Brad Fittler met with referees boss Bernard Sutton.

The 2018 NRL season has been marred by a string of refereeing controversies so far with officials heavily criticised for the growing trend in penalties in games along with the increased number of sin-bins.

The appointment of the men who will officiate the Origin opener also attracted controversy with the game's two best referees, Matt Cecchin and Grant Atkins both overlooked in favour of Gerard Sutton and Ashley Klein, who was dropped earlier this season.

Both coaches have reportedly been told to expect the whistle blowing to continue if players toe the line too far, meaning it could be a stop-start encounter on Wednesday.

However, Walters told Sky Sports' Big Sports Breakfast the onus was on the players to play within the laws of the game.

"Both Brad and I were asked to come in and see the referees for a general discussion about the game and how the game is going to be refereed," Walters said.

"We're fully aware of what's expected of our players, I don't think it's going to be refereed too differently to what's happening in the NRL.

"From a Queensland point of view, we want to be really disciplined on Wednesday night with everything that we're doing, you can't be giving away silly penalties at Origin level, they're very costly.

"They're (referees) doing their best and they're going to do a great job I believe, it's up to the players to set a good standard around everything they're doing.

"Our players will be toeing the line as such with everything they need to do around the rules of rugby league.

"We want Origin to be the spectacle of the players and we don't want to see anything being pulled up by referees unnecessarily, but if they have to do their job, then they have to do their job.

In 2018, the referees have blown the whistle for penalties a massive 1765 times, that's 17.65 penalties per game.

While there have also been 59 sin-bins in just 13 weeks of football including a whopping 14 players in round 11.

Game one will kick-off at 8:10PM on Wednesday, June 6 at the MCG.
