Penrith's Sione Katoa has avoided suspension for a clumsy sliding knee on Dane Gagai in the late stages of his side's loss to the Rabbitohs on Friday night.

The Panthers interchange hooker dropped to his knees as the Souths centre scored the penultimate try, collecting Gagai in the ribs and sparking a melee.

As the dust settled, referee Ashley Klein sent the try upstairs, and acknowledged a possible eight-point try.

The bunker review was succinct in Katoa's favour: "The fact that the Penrith player slides in with an arm on the ground would clear any incidental contact on the ground. We have a decision."

While the eight-point try option was disregarded, Gagai - who earlier put on a spectacular try assist of his own - was awarded the four-pointer, which was converted by Reynolds.

Viliame Kikau scored just two minutes later, and Nathan Cleary converted to bring the Panthers to within four, setting up a grandstand finish.

However, the score remained 22-18 to the final siren as Souths consigned Penrith to their fifth loss of the season, and third loss at home from four attempts.

The NRL's match review report on Saturday morning saw the Kiwi hit with a grade one dangerous contact charge.

That carries a one-week suspension, though that is reduced with an early guilty plea.

The 24-year-old is now free to take on the Raiders in Canberra next Saturday afternoon.
