Shane Flanagan has stated his desire to take up the head coach position at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs following the recent departure of Trent Barrett.

Speaking to 2GB's The Continuous Call Team, Flanagan was open about his desire to fill the top job at Belmore.

"I haven't had any chats with the Bulldogs, and I've got no idea what their plans are," Flanagan told The Continuous Call Team.

“I’d love to do the job. I want to get back into coaching at NRL level - I think I could do a good job there.

"I suppose [their plans] will be decided over the next couple of weeks. At this point, there has been no contact [with me]."

Flanagan is currently a consultant at the St George-Illawarra Dragons, previously an assistant coach at the club in 2020.

The 56-year-old's last appearance as a head coach was in 2018 with the Cronulla Sharks before he was de-registered for failing to adhere to the conditions of a previous suspension.

During his time at the Sharks, he coached his son - current Bulldogs halfback Kyle Flanagan.

If he was to be re-united with his son at the Bulldogs, Flanagan explained there would be no special treatment.

"If he's not the best halfback at the club - no matter where I am at - he doesn't play. Kyle knows that himself," he said.

Flanagan then went on to defend his son from recent criticism, explaining that the 23-year-old is more than capable of being a first-grade halfback.

"You haven't seen anything that he can do at the moment," he said.

"I think he's actually gone a little bit backwards over the last 18 months for different reasons.

"But he's a better player than what he's showing at the moment. He can compete really hard, and needs the right environment.

"And that goes for a lot of the Bulldogs players at the moment. They're not playing well, and it's unfortunate. Last night they competed for half the game ... and were way too far behind at halftime."
