The Kangaroos are looking to retain the Rugby League World in England this year following their 2017 triumph.

Whilst most players are on handsome salaries at their respective clubs, national team payments typically aren't shabby, either.

Ahead of the tournament, here's what we know so far about pay.

How much are Australian players paid at the Rugby League World Cup?

Specific match or tournament payments for the Australian men's side in 2022 have not been made public.

In 2017, Kangaroos players were paid $20,000 per match

Each member of the squad also received an extra $50,000 that year after they won the tournament.

This year's World Cup features a $3.5 million funding pot, which will provide equal payments to every player, along with prizemoney for the women’s and wheelchair tournaments.

Potential pay clash looms for Rugby League World Cup

For this year's World Cup, male, female and wheelchair players have all been guaranteed a share of at least 45 per cent of their nation's participation fee.

However, this deal - which was mandated by the Rugby League Players' Association -  only runs until October 31, 2022.

It was originally finalised when the tournament was planned for 2021.

This means the deal will expire before the knockout stage of the men's tournament and prior to the women's group games.

RLPA chief executive Clint Newton has highlighted the potential for confusion over terms and conditions.

“At this point, there is no agreement in place past October 31,” Newton told The Australian.

“This affects the terms and conditions and remunerations of players who will play for their nations during November’s World Cup.

“The World Cup hasn’t snuck up on us, it’s been in the calendar for years and was meant to be played last year. This is one of the many reasons we pushed to start negotiating and reach an agreement for our players earlier.

“This isn’t about a pay dispute. This is simply about having a clear understanding of the terms and conditions and payments that are connected to being employed to represent your nation."
