Paul Gallen has been put on ice for Cronulla's round four meeting with Parramatta after sustaining a rib cartilage injury in their win over North Queensland last week.

Cronulla have taken precaution with their veteran skipper who was forced off the field in his record-breaking 329th NRL match after a relatively routine looking tackle.

A return date for Gallen will depend on the amount of pain he is in, with roughly a one to three week timeline being placed on him.

Youngster Jack WIlliams has been named to start at lock, while 18th man Scott Sorenson slots onto the bench.

The Sharks have also been forced to reshuffle their backline with fullback Matt Moylan set to miss the next six week with a grade two hamstring strain.

After news of his debut went viral in an emotional video with coach John Morris, rookie Bronson Xerri will line up in the centres, pushing Josh Dugan to fullback.

The Eels are expected to line up 1-17, welcoming back forward Tepai Moeroa from a calf injury.
