No new teams will compete in second edition of the NRLW in 2019 after the NRL ignored calls for expansion.

The same four clubs as last year – inaugural premiers Brisbane Broncos, runners-up Sydney Roosters, the St George Illawarra Dragons and New Zealand Warriors – will play in the four-week competition.

The action will again take place during the men's finals series in September, with each team to play each other once.

The top two sides then meet in the grand final, which will act as a curtain-raiser for the NRL decider.

Although the AFLW already has 10 teams, with four to be added in 2020, the NRLW has chosen to delay expansion to ensure the quality of play remains high.

"While there's still a lot of excitement and people are keen for expansion, there's also an understanding of benefits in consolidating what worked in 2018 to learn again in the second year," NRL general manager of the women’s elite program Tiffany Slater told NRL.com.

"The excitement is great and we love having the passion and enthusiasm. We need to be able to harness that but balance it with making sustainable decisions as we said through 2018."

Following the success of the first official women's State of Origin fixture in 2018, another standalone match will be held on Friday, June 21 at North Sydney Oval.

Earlier this year, the Blues staved off Queensland to win 16-10 in front of a record 6,824 fans.

Other notable women's events throughout 2019 include Indigenous and Maori All Stars teams playing before the men in February, four international teams competing in the World Cup Nines in October and a Prime Minister's XIII match towards the back-end of the year.
