Just when we thought we had any idea what was going on in the world of rugby league, something like round 22 comes along and knocks our socks off.

Firstly, in Johnathan Thurston's final ever derby in front of home fans at 1300Smiles Stadium, JT wound back the clock and his Cowboys defeated the Broncos to leave Brisbane just hanging onto eighth position with Wests Tigers nipping at their heels. Even though they won, North Queensland now find themselves on the bottom of the NRL ladder.

The Warriors then dusted the Knights and the Roosters rose to the top of the NRL ladder with a gutsy win over South Sydney Rabbitohs.

On Saturday, Nathan Cleary had the chance to win it for the Panthers, missed, and then finally sealed their victory with a clutch field goal against the Titans.

The Sea Eagles won their second game on the trot behind two tries from star fullback Tom Trbojevic.

In what was possibly the biggest surprise of the round (depending on how you look at it) the Parramatta Eels rose off the bottom of the NRL ladder and smacked St George Illawarra Dragons 40-4.

Jarryd Hayne crossed for a hat-trick and continued his barnstorming form, while the Eels ran in another four tries compared to the hapless Red V's sole four-pointer.

On Sunday, Wests Tigers just held on against Canberra, ending the Green Machine's season, and the Sharks beat Melbourne in a replay of the 2016 NRL grand final, despite Suliasi Vunivalu crossing for a brace.

With just the three home-and-away fixtures remaining in the NRL season, who will finish on top the try-scoring charts?
