NRL try-scorers: David Fusitu'a takes over at the top of the charts image

New Zealand Warriors flyer David Fusitu'a has taken over at the top of the NRL try-scoring charts with just one week remaining for the 2018 regular season.

Fusitu'a bagged a hat-trick against the Panthers on Friday to make it five tries in his past two games to lead Valentine Holmes by one try after the Sharks fullback scored in his side's victory over Newcastle.

Elsewhere, it was a fairytale finish for Johnathan Thurston in Townsville with the star halfback playing a crucial role in the Cowboys emphatic 44-6 demolition of the Eels.

Saturday football was almost a trifecta of upsets with Souths going down to Canberra, the Storm narrowly defeating the Gold Coast and the Broncos upsetting the Roosters in Sydney.

St George Illawarra dropped out of the top four after a humiliating 38-0 loss to the Bulldogs at Kogarah after Cronulla defeated Newcastle earlier on at Shark park.

Three sensational tries from Reimis Smith left the Red V stumbling in sixth place and the club's own fans turning on them post-match after it was their fourth loss in five games.
