St George Illawarra captain Gareth Widdop is all but certain to depart the Dragons at the end of 2019 with two UK Super League clubs fighting to land the marquee five-eighth's signature.

The English-born Widdop has spoken openly about his desire to return home and refused to confirm he will remain at the Dragons beyond next year despite being contracted until 2021.

Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants are the teams in the running to buy the 29-year-old Test playmaker.

Nine's Wide World of Sports' The Mole reported on Monday that a two-year deal with the Wolves was virtually completed, however the Giants remain a chance to snare Widdop and are prepared to stump up a huge amount of cash for his services.

Huddersfield coach Simon Woolford, an ex-Canberra Raiders and Dragons hooker, was upfront about wanting Widdop in his team.

"We can pay him what he is worth," Woolford said. "We will be making a move at the appropriate time."

But Warrington is seen as the likely destination for Widdop, with former St George Illawarra coach Steve Price at the helm of the side.

Price guided the Wolves to the Super League grand final and Challenge Cup final this year in his first campaign in charge, though they lost both matches.

The 40-year-old, who was assistant coach of the Cronulla Sharks during their premiership season of 2016 and the Dragons when they won the competition in 2010, recently extended his time at Warrington through to 2021.

Widdop played under Price briefly at the Saints in 2014 before the mentor was axed after a series of poor results.

If he does join the Wolves, Widdop will form a potent halves combination with Blake Austin, who left Canberra at the conclusion of the 2018 NRL season.

St George Illawarra have been resigned to losing Widdop for some time, hence why they recruited Parramatta Eels pivot Corey Norman last week

Norman is expected to wear the No.6 for the Red V, pushing Widdop to fullback in 2019 – a position he played in the juniors and has previously excelled in for England and the Melbourne Storm.

According to The Mole, Widdop could still finish his career at the Dragons after he spends 2020 and 2021 in the Super League.
