Welcome to The Fair Dinkum Department - a weekly deep dive into rugby league's hottest issues and whether or not we think they are real or ridiculous.

Concussions and HIA dramas have dominated the headlines following a chaotic first weekend of the season, with the likes of Ricky Stuart and Adam O'Brien blowing up over some costly decisions from the independent doctor.

Elsewhere, Sharks veteran Wade Graham is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines for a high shot on Davvy Moale that left fans and experts across the game divided.

And what about the Dolphins? After being written off all pre-season, Wayne Bennett's side produced a shock Round 1 upset over a depleted Roosters outfit and put the competition on notice.

Here's your weekly look at the biggest issues in the NRL, courtesy of The Fair Dinkum Department.

Should the NRL scrap the independent doctor?

Over the weekend, Newcastle and Canberra were both impacted by the independent doctor and some questionable HIA decisions.

Kalyn Ponga was forced from the field in the Knights loss to the Warriors but passed his assessment, while young gun Seb Kris was also forced off despite seemingly suffering a knee injury during the Raiders narrow defeat at the hands of the Cowboys.

Are the Dolphins heading for the finals in 2023?

After a shock Round 1 victory at Suncorp Stadium over one of the competition heavyweights, many are now questioning whether or not the Dolphins can compete for a top-eight berth.

The likes of Felise Kaufusi, Sean O'Sullivan and Jeremy Marshall-King all had strong performances against the Roosters, while old supercoach Wayne Bennett was up to his old tricks in the post-game.

Did the NRL get Wade Graham's sanction right?

In the 65th minute of a hotly-contested clash between the Sharks and Rabbitohs on Saturday night, Wade Graham was sin-binned for a high shot on Davvy Moale.

The 32-year-old has since been hit with a grade one reckless high tackle, incurring a three-game suspension with an early guilty plea.

Why did the NRL change the Dally M voting system?

Prior to Round 1, the NRL made the bold decision to change the Dally M voting system for the upcoming season.

Instead of one judge per game, there will now be two judges and therefore a maximum of six points for a player to be awarded.

Are the NRL player pronunciation videos a help or hindrance?

In the lead-up to the season, NRL clubs have been publishing videos with the players pronouncing their names, in order to make life easier for commentators and also to help pay respect to their families and heritage.
