NRL 2020: Trent Robinson throws support by player loan system image

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has thrown his support behind the introduction of a loan system that would facilitate moves such as Harry Grant's proposed switch to Wests Tigers.

Stuck behind all-time great Cameron Smith and rising star Brandon Smith at the Storm, highly rated young hooker Grant is keen on gaining valuable first-grade minutes at the Tigers, with the retirement of Robbie Farah and a long-term injury to Jacob Liddle leaving them short at dummy half.

The move, which appears to have been blocked by the NRL over salary cap concerns, would see Paul Momirovski go to Melbourne for a season, adding depth to their thin outside back stocks.

Both players would continue to be paid by their parent clubs and return at the end of the loan agreement.

Such a system exists in many football leagues around the world, as well as in England's RFL, and Robinson, who previously coached in the Super League, has backed its introduction in the NRL.

"It's a good opportunity for guys that are possibly NRL players in other teams to go and play NRL," Robinson said.

"Guys that are playing for a really strong team like St Helens can go and play for a middle team or a lower team if they've got injuries and they can go and get some experience.

"It ends up spreading the talent pool around, it benefits the club that form players quite well and have players in their team that can benefit the competition and it keeps the best players throughout the competition, rather than pooling in one club.

"It's got merit, it obviously has to be worked through and talked about, but we're always trying to look to improve our competition and that's certainly something that should be looked at."

Robinson was speaking ahead of his team's World Club Challenge clash with St Helens on Sunday morning.

The NRL premiers will be looking to become the first team to defend their title in the history of the match and one Rooster will be having his first run out in an unfamiliar position.

Normally an edge forward, Angus Crichton has been tasked with filling the void at left centre following Latrell Mitchell's departure, a role Robinson is backing the 24-year-old to handle.

"Every session he's got better and better and better and he's got more comfortable," Robinson said.

"He's a powerful man, he's a learner and he's surrounded by some key guys there in Tupou and Keary.

"Gus is the ultimate team guy. He loves a challenge and when he puts his mind to it, he can achieve anything he wants.

"He said 'okay, I've been dreaming about backrow, but if you want me to do a job there then I'll do it. What do I need to know?' and he went about doing it."

The match gets underway from 6:45am (AEDT).
