Another Fifita could choose heritage over his birth state, with Sharks prop Andrew hinting that his younger cousin David could join him in walking away from Origin selection to play for Tonga.
The 19-year-old Fifita's Broncos teammate Tevita Pangai Jr on Tuesday turned his back on NSW and pledged his allegiance to the Mate Ma'a as the international game's profile continues to grow.
Fifita – who is tipped to nab a spot on Queensland's bench – may be poised to follow suit and choose to play for Tonga against New Zealand on the eve of Origin II.

Though Tonga is a tier-two nation and players can represent the Mate Ma'a and play Origin, these scheduling conflicts have forced stars like Andrew Fifita to pick a side.
Cronulla forward said the rookie Fifita has expressed also desire to represent Tonga – a decision that could cost him a Maroons berth.
“I feel like change is coming, especially for the international game,” Andrew Fifita said.
“When I first started [and pledged allegiance to Tonga] at the [2017] World Cup, my name went through hell.
“Six weeks after that when the World Cup was finishing, it was the best thing that happened to the international game.
“I see young kids coming through and I can speak highly of my little cousin, little Dave, how he has pretty much changed his personality and he wants to play for Tonga.
"He wants to excel that way.”
The front-rower added he was not pressuring Fifita to commit to Tonga.
"I don’t know whether [Queensland) will throw him in such a big arena," Fifita said.
“I’m not too sure. He’s family and whatever he chooses, I will be 100 per cent behind him.”
According to AAP, Queensland Rugby League officials had not heard anything to suggest Fifita would opt for Tonga over Queensland.
Born in Brisbane, Fifita came through the Maroons pathways and represented the state at under 16s, 18s and 20s level.
On another note, Andrew Fifita said he did not persuade Pangai Jnr to sacrifice his NSW dreams – far from it.
"He ran it past me and I always said [Origin] is something you have to experience," Andrew Fifita said.
"I'm not too sure what changed his mind. I always said give it a crack; the atmosphere ... you'll thrive off it and love it."
