Canberra centre Joseph Leilua has been charged with grade one dangerous contact for an errant elbow to the head of Knights lock Tim Glasby but will avoid suspension with an early guilty plea.

Leilua lashed out at Glasby while fighting to play the ball in the 68th minute of the Raiders' 17-10 victory against Newcastle at GIO Stadium last night.

He then stood over the injured player and gave him a gobful.

Glasby left the field after the blow but Leilua was only penalised for the act, escaping the sin bin.

"Unfortunately, that is very Joey Leilua," said Fox League commentator Warren Smith, referencing the powerful outside back's renowned short fuse.

Due to his clean judicial record, Leilua won't miss any matches provided he accepts the charge and the carryover points it entails.

If he opts to challenge and loses, the 27-year-old will be sidelined for one match.

Leilua's brain fade handed the Knights a golden attacking opportunity as they closed in on Canberra's six-point lead at the time.

But the Raiders managed to hold off the Knights and save his blushes, with Sam Williams then booting a field goal in the 76th minute to seal the win.

Newcastle fans erupted over the decision to allow Leilua to remain on the park after he whacked Glasby, claiming it was one of many calls that went against them.
