The NRL Nines could return in the 2020 pre-season after a three-year absence.
According to reports from NRL.com and Fairfax, the NRL has contacted clubs about potentially resurrecting the tournament, which was scrapped after 2017 amid fears of player burnout and dwindling interest.
The event would likely be held in Australia instead of Eden Park in Auckland if it was to be brought back, with the Nines losing traction with fans and sponsors during its final two years in New Zealand.

The majority of clubs would also be more willing to support the concept if their travel was minimised ahead of the season proper.
Fairfax claims the NRL has already begun talks with various state governments that would be interested in hosting the Nines.
Parramatta's brand new Bankwest Stadium is touted as one potential venue while the under-construction North Queensland Stadium looms as another option if it's completed in time.
Western Australia is also reportedly in contention to stage the Nines at the recently-built Optus Stadium in Perth.
"The broadcasters, the fans and players are all keen to see the Nines return,” an NRL spokesman told Fairfax.
“So we are working with all stakeholders to try to make it happen. It is early days but we are hopeful the Nines will return.”
Bankwest Stadium will hold the World Cup Nines tournament this October, with 12 men's teams and four women's sides to compete in the two-day event.
Some of the most dynamic and exciting players in the NRL and Super League are expected to take part. Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has promised to pick a star-studded squad.
The NRL will liaise with all stakeholders in the game and consider player workloads before reviving the club Nines, however.
The NRL's pre-season calendar already includes the Indigenous versus Maori All-Stars fixture in February.
The Sydney Roosters were the winners of the most recent NRL Nines edition, with the Eels, Rabbitohs and Cowboys claiming titles in the preceding years.
Parramatta's 2016 victory was revoked due to salary cap breaches.
