Andrew Johns calls for NRL Bunker to 'blow up the super slo-mo' replay image

Andrew Johns has again implored the NRL Bunker to scrap super slow-motion replays when reviewing potential tries.

The eighth Immortal was furious on Sunday after Brisbane Broncos debutant Xavier Coates was denied a second try because frame-by-frame footage uncovered a blink-and-you'll-miss-it knock-on.

Despite the decision being correct, Johns asserted that "the game isn't played in slo-mo" and implored the Bunker to make calls based on real-speed video.

"They're looking for reasons not to give the try," Johns steamed in Channel Nine commentary last weekend.

After a round punctuated by blunders – leading NRL head of football Graham Annesley to admit the current refereeing standard "just isn't good enough" – Johns threw up some suggestions for the code's review officials.

"In the Broncos game, Brisbane young guy Xavier Coates went up for a bomb and there was a slight touch," Johns told the Immortal Behaviour show.

"If two players go up and compete for the ball, even if the ball goes forward and touches the other player, I think it should be awarded a try.

"Blow up the super slow-mo. The game's not played in super slow-mo. Watch the game in real-time, make a decision.

"Look at it once, look at it twice at most, then make a decision."

Johns' latest comments on the subject come after Annesley conceded the men in the Bunker have confused themselves by poring over every available angle in slo-mo.

New Zealand Warriors winger Ken Maumalo was stripped of an obvious four-pointer on Saturday, with the Bunker inexplicably ruling he knocked on.

"They put doubt in their own minds by looking at the second angle. They should have made the decision based on the first angle they looked at," Annesley said.

While Johns offered firm advice to the Bunker, Fox League's Brett Finch also had an explosive view.

"Blow up the Bunker," Finch said after the Maumalo no-try.
