If Nathan Hindmarsh thought the premiership jokes would stop after he finally won some rugby league silverware, he best think again.
Hindy at last broke through for a win in Parramatta colours when he led the Eels to victory over Canterbury in the Legends of League grand final in Newcastle.
Okay, it wasn’t actually the same as winning the real thing in front of 80,000 screaming fans at ANZ Stadium.
But for 330-gamer Hindmarsh, who has been the butt of jokes over his failure to land league’s top prize during his stellar career, he’s taking it.
Just don’t expect the gee-ups to cease.
Manly great and Hindy agitator Steve Menzies, who played for the Barbarians at the Legends tournament, told Sporting News: “I don’t want to take the shine off his glory - he did win - but it’s just a little off an NRL grand final.
“It’s an old man’s NRL grand final win. But this is what it’s come to for Hindy.
“He’s got to play against old people to win. He’s clutching at straws.
“It (the jokes) will ramp up even more. It will just get worse for him.”
But Beaver, who won two premierships with Manly, did make one small concession.
He said: “I want to see his premiership ring. When he gets a Legends of League premiership ring, I might ‘cheers’ him.”
Parramatta beat arch-rivals and defending champions Canterbury 8-6 in the final.
The tournament attracted 10,000 fans, raising much needed funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.
