NRL contract news: South Sydney Rabbitohs announce Cameron Murray extension amid rugby union rumblings image

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have extended the contract of club captain Cameron Murray.

The star lock has added a further three years to his existing deal, keeping him at Redfern until at least the end of 2028.

He now holds the equal-longest contract at the Rabbitohs, joining Tevita Tatola who re-signed earlier this season.

Cameron Murray signs contract extension with South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Rabbitohs confirmed a fresh deal for their captain Murray on Monday afternoon.

With two years remaining on his contract, there was minimal speculation about the NSW and Australian representative's future (aside from rugby union rumblings), but South Sydney have been proactive in securing his future at the club.

Murray has played all 146 of his NRL games in the cardinal and myrtle after making his first grade debut in 2017.

His new deal will see him remain with the Rabbitohs until he is 30 years old.

"This club has always been home to me and I never saw myself playing anywhere else," Murray said.

"It was a no-brainer for me to extend my contract here and I’m grateful to be able to represent South Sydney, our members and fans every day.

"The club has always looked after me and I feel like I’ve always done my best to put the club’s best interests at the forefront of anything I do.

"I’m really grateful to the club for putting its trust in me to be a part of our next five years.

"It’s my responsibility now to repay that trust with my performances on the field and my actions off the field.

"It is an absolute honour to captain this club, to play alongside my teammates and to work with my coaches and the staff at the club."

Cameron Murray previously backed for rugby union switch

Murray's new deal almost certainly guarantees he will spend the remainder of his sporting career in rugby league.

His physical attributes, skills and previous experience in the 15-man game led to plenty of discussion regarding a switch to rugby union, but that is now unlikely to come to fruition.

Rumblings of a potential return to union have never gone away, and Wallabies prop and fellow Newington alumni Angus Bell stated recently that he believes it would be a seamless transition.

“Cam Murray 100 per cent would be one [to convert]," he told The Sporting News/YKTR's Ebbs and Flows.

"When I was at school, I was in Year 9 and I was watching him play First XV in our school system, and he was the best player on the field by a country mile every single time he took the field.

"The position of inside centre suits him so well – he’s not huge, he’s very evasive, unreal ball carrier, the courage is 100 out of 100.

"He would be, I reckon, the best inside centre in the world."
