Welcome to The Fair Dinkum Department - a weekly deep dive into rugby league's hottest issues and whether or not we think they are real or ridiculous.

The talk of the town has turned to the Wests Tigers, who put in another shambolic performance and sit in 17th spot on the NRL ladder after three rounds.

Elsewhere, Ryan Matterson is edging closer to a return from a controversial suspension, while the pressure is mounting on the Cowboys after two-straight defeats.

And if you thought it was too early to talk about State of Origin, think again!

Here's your weekly look at the biggest issues in the NRL, courtesy of The Fair Dinkum Department.

Should the Tigers drop Luke Brooks?

Following a horrendous performance against Canterbury on Sunday afternoon, the attention has turned to the Wests Tigers and their ongoing issues in the halves.

Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi have both come under fire, and with new recruit Brandon Wakeham impressing off the bench, the coaching staff have some major selection decisions ahead of them.

Have the Cowboys bought into their own hype?

Following a second-straight loss, North Queensland are under some pressure to turn things around and replicate the form that saw them finish in the top-four in 2022.

Todd Payten has indicated a 'lack of trust' is holding the Cowboys back early in the season, while some of their big guns have gone missing early in the year.

Does the NRL need to introduce mandatory headgear?

In the wake of the 11-day stand-down rule being implemented for concussions, the talk has now turned to preventative measures for concussions.

Unfortunately, the ill-informed are still calling for mandatory headgear.

Is the Ryan Matterson hysteria real or ridiculous?

Ryan Matterson is set to make his return for Parramatta in Round 4 - but there is a belief now that the second-rower needs to earn back the trust of his teammates.

The NSW Origin star opted to take a three-game suspension instead of a $4000 fine following last year's grand final - but there might be more to the story.

Should the Blues add fresh faces for State of Origin?

It's never too early to talk about State of Origin, especially with NSW coming up short last year.

And with three rounds of football behind us, there are some bolters putting their hands up for a spot in Brad Fittler's side already.

Do NRL clubs need to sanction players for spraying staff?

David Klemmer found himself in hot water last year, but Titans recruit Kieran Foran was just displaying his passion - which way do you lean?
