North Queensland Cowboys v Newcastle Knights: Henry Perenara cops it for controversial sin-bin image

NRL referee Henry Perenara has absolutely copped it via Twitter after controversially sending Newcastle Knights Danny Levi to the sin-bin...for some reason.

With the Knights travelling to Townsville to take on JT and the North Queensland Cowboys at 1300SMiles Stadium, fans were less than impressed to see Perenara listed as one of the refs.

It didn't take long for Perenara, who has been in the headlines far more consistently that he should have this season, to make his mark.

In the 18th minute, Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt brought the ball up towards his own 40-metre line where Levi and Lachlan Fitzgibbon were waiting.

The tackle was made without much fuss, but Feldt lost control of the ball.

Unsurprisingly, the Cowboys were awarded a penalty, however, Perenara went one further and sent Levi to the bin.

Watch the incident in the video player below.

Captain Mitchell Pearce tried to understand what was going on, while Levi took an age to get off the field much to the annoyance of all the commentators.

With the extra man, the Cowboys scored with their next set of six.

Perenara didn't escape Twitter's wrath.

The Knights started the game strongly before Levi's journey to the naughty corner halted their momentum.

Fitzgibbon and Aidan Guerra scored for Newcastle before the Cowboys hit back through Justin O'Neill.

Eventually, the Knights got back on top when Fitzgibbon scrolled across for his double.
