Martin Taupau has sent shockwaves through the rugby league community by announcing that he’s switching allegiances from New Zealand to Samoa.
The rampaging prop has one appearance for Samoa – in 2013 – but has since made 24 appearances for the Kiwis.
Taupau announced the move via Twitter on Friday, less than 24 hours after being named in Michael Maguire’s extended squad for New Zealand.
Taupau’s full statement is below.
"After hours of soul searching and plenty of discussion with my fiancée and family, I had to make a tough call to the NZ Kiwis coach Michael Maguire this morning to inform him that I have made the decision to make myself unavailable for selection for the NZ Kiwis, and elected to make myself available for the Toa Samoa team once again," he wrote in his post.
"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that were given to me and the ability to represent my birth nation. In 2010 I had the honour of captaining the Junior Kiwis and then made my international debut in 2014!
"Since then I have worn the NZ jersey with pride and passion 24 times and will forever cherish every moment."
I have formed lifelong friendships over the years through the Kiwis and the support from our fans all around the world and will forever be grateful for that.
I am a proud New Zealand born Samoan and I hope that sharing my reasons will help you find the courage to follow your heart and be true to yourself.
Now fingers crossed that I get selected for the mighty Toa Samoa.
If selected, Taupau will line up against Papau New Guinea on the 22nd at Leichhardt Oval.
More to come.
