Latrell Mitchell sin bin: Rabbitohs star penalised after Jordan Riki's late hit on Cameron Murray image

Latrell Mitchell and Jordan Riki were both sin-binned in the second half of the Rabbitohs vs. Broncos match on Friday night.

With Brisbane trailing 0-22, Riki made heavy contact with Souths captain Cameron Murray, who didn't have the ball in his hands.

A light scuffle then started before Mitchell ran in from a distance and collided with Riki, resulting in more players joining the tussle.

Watch the incident below:

Mitchell was pulled aside by the referee before being sin-binned.

"He escalates it," Gee explained.

Riki was then also sent to the sheds for 10 minutes.

His hit drew comparisons to Joseph Sua'ali'i's late shot on Reece Walsh in the State of Origin opener, with that incident resulting in the NSW centre being sent off.

The Rabbitohs went on to win their Round 15 match against the Broncos 22-12, marking the first time they have won three games on the trot this season.

Mitchell scored in the 20th minute to give Souths a commanding 18-0 lead.

Despite an earlier sin bin to Richard Kennar, Brisbane couldn't make the most of their numerical advantage.

Deine Mariner scored two tries late in the match to close the gap, but it wasn't enough.

Internet reacts to Latrell Mitchell, Jordan Riki sin bins

The fact that Mitchell and Riki received the same punishment on Friday evening sparked plenty of controversy online.

Some fans were of the belief that the Broncos forward's hit was worthy of a send-off, rather than a sin bin.

Will Latrell Mitchell be selected for NSW in Origin Game 2?

With Sua'ali'i to miss the second match of this year's Origin series, there is a spot in the NSW centres up for grabs.

As an immensely talented player with experience in the representative arena, Mitchell is one of a few names being tossed around.

Other candidates include Jesse Ramien and Bradman Best.

Mitchell's performance on Friday night should do his chances some good, scoring a try, running for 175 metres and recording a try assist.

However, his decision to run into a scuffle following Riki's hit may be noted by coach Michael Maguire, who will want to ensure his team is mature on the field in Game 2.
