NRL ban fan following Latrell Mitchell racial abuse incident
After close to two months, the NRL has handed down a punishment to the fan accused of racially abusing Latrell Mitchell at the Penrith Panthers' BlueBet Stadium.
The incident occurred during the Rabbitohs' loss to the reigning premiers in Round 2, with the Souths fullback allegedly abused at half-time as the two teams went down the tunnel.
The teenage fan was then escorted out of the ground by security.
In their statement, the NRL shared that the fan will remain banned unless progress is made in relation to their behaviour, which will include an apology and relevant education.
"The National Rugby League has completed a review into an allegation of racial vilification towards South Sydney Rabbitohs player Latrell Mitchell in Round 2," the statement read.
"The NRL confirmed today it had issued a notice intending to ban a spectator from attending NRL events until such time as the young person can establish that sufficient steps have been taken to address their behaviour.
"These steps will include apologising and completing appropriate training and education in respectful behaviour and cultural awareness.
"The NRL thanks Latrell Mitchell for reporting this matter and reaffirms that no form of vilification will be tolerated in rugby league."
The fan in question has five business days to respond to the NRL's notice.
Penrith Panthers put support behind spectator ban
Following the NRL's decision on Wednesday afternoon, the Panthers also issued a statement supporting the ruling.
They stressed their intention to continue to foster a tolerant and welcoming environment at their home ground.
"After working closely with the NRL throughout the investigation process, Panthers supports the decision made by NRL," the statement read.
"... Panthers will continue to work towards making all players, staff and fans feel safe and welcome at games at BlueBet Stadium."
The Panthers will next play at BlueBet Stadium in Round 11 on May 12.
